What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a temporary but effective solution for facial aging. They are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin to reduce wrinkles, soften creases and restore volume. As a treatment to minimize signs of aging, fillers can be a nonsurgical and cost-effective facelift alternative for people who want to look more youthful.

Fillers can also enhance the contours and proportions of the face. They are regularly used for nonsurgical lip augmentation, cheek augmentation, jawline contouring and more.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

One reason our skin wrinkles and sags with age is a loss of moisture. Most popular brands of dermal fillers target this problem with ingredients that help the skin retain moisture. One such ingredient is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is your skin’s natural humectant. It is a large sugar molecule that attracts water and keeps the skin hydrated.

Unfortunately, aging, sun exposure and environmental toxins can stunt HA production. Our skin naturally gets dryer over time, causing wrinkles and sagging to become more prominent as we age.

Dermal fillers can help counteract this. By injecting HA directly into the skin, our providers can restore moisture and volume to depleted areas of the face. Only one session is usually needed to achieve the desired results, which can last six to 12 months, or even longer!

What Dermal Fillers Treat

Dermal fillers are an effective nonsurgical treatment option for the mid and lower face. They can help target many issues in these areas, including:

  • Laugh lines (parentheses lines)
  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal chin lines
  • Vertical cheek lines
  • Smoker’s lines

In addition to their benefits for unwanted lines, we can also use fillers to shape and volumize the:

  • Lips
  • Tear troughs
  • Nose
  • Cheeks
  • Jawline
  • Chin
  • Hands
  • Temples

Dermal fillers offer natural-looking results. Facial muscles are not affected, so you maintain your natural expressions and movement.

Dermal Fillers at Wink Medical Aesthetics

There are numerous brands of dermal fillers on the market. At Wink Medical Aesthetics, we use clinically tested and FDA-approved products. We offer two tried and true brands to ensure our clients get the best treatment available:

Owned by Allergan Aesthetics, JUVÉDERM offers several HA dermal fillers, each with unique features and benefits.

This injectable gel is intended for the cheek and mid-face area to treat volume loss and for the chin to enhance your profile. The results are visible after a single treatment can last up to a year, or even longer. The product works like a subtle facelift, bringing your cheeks further up and filling in hollows.

For wrinkles and folds in the lower third of the face, this product can be used for:

  • Laugh lines (parentheses lines)
  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal chin lines
  • Vertical cheek lines

With optimal treatment, Vollure can soften lines for up to 18 months.

We mainly use this injectable gel for smoker’s lines and under-eye hollows. Vertical lines around the lips are caused by sun exposure and repeated muscle movement. Loss of volume in the under-eye area is due to the loss of fat and moisture that comes with aging. We also use Volbella to add hydration to the lips without increasing volume.

Ultra XC is intended for injection into the lips and perioral area to increase volume, improve definition and minimize fine lines. We use this filler for all kinds of lip enhancement, whether your lips have changed over time or you simply want fuller lips.

Ultra Plus XC has a thicker formula designed to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It is a good choice for deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines, as well as noticeable areas of volume loss on the cheeks and temples.

Another popular brand of HA fillers, Restylane has a more granular texture, while JUVÉDERM® is smoother. This gives Restylane advantages in certain circumstances. For one, it may stay in place better and add more volume. This can make it the preferred choice for volume restoration and for patients seeking specific results. The Restylane products available at our medspa are:

Restylane’s original formula is a versatile choice for filling nasolabial folds, enhancing the lips and correcting hollow under-eyes. With optimal treatment, the effects of Restylane generally last about six months as the product gradually dissolves.

Restylane Refyne

We often use this injectable for deep creases in the lower face, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines. The gel has unique cross-linking that helps maintain natural movement, so you look like you, only with smoother skin.

Restylane Defyne

This filler is intended for nasolabial folds and marionette lines, as well as for enhancing chin projection. Defyne is FDA-approved for moderate to deep lines, volume loss and facial contouring. The innovative cross-linking technology helps maintain your natural facial expressions.

Restylane Lyft

Restylane Lyft is uniquely formulated to treat both the face and hands. In the face, Lyft is well suited for increasing fullness and definition in the cheeks and mid-face area. In the hands, Lyft helps reverse volume loss and minimize the appearance of visible tendons and blood vessels.

Restylane Contour

Contour contains Restylane’s proprietary XpresHAn Technology™ to restore volume while maintaining natural facial expressions. This unique injectable gel creates natural-looking rejuvenation for the cheeks and mid-face.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Fillers are safe when performed by an experienced and licensed medical esthetician. These products contain a synthetic form of HA, which closely resembles natural HA produced by your body and is well-tolerated as a result.

Are there any side effects?

Swelling, redness and minor bruising and bleeding near the injection sites are the most common side effects of getting dermal fillers. Most of these are mild and can be treated at home with cold packs or arnica cream.

Does filler treatment hurt?

Although we do use needles and cannulas to administer dermal fillers, we take the necessary steps to keep our patients comfortable. We may numb the treatment area with ice or a local numbing agent before the injections. Most fillers also contain the local anesthetic lidocaine to minimize discomfort.

Can the results be reversed?

In short, yes! If you are not happy with the results, or simply decide you don’t want fillers anymore, we can dissolve the gel by injecting hyaluronidase, an enzyme that accelerates the breakdown of HA. Your skin will not look stretched out or aged; the treated area will just return to its pre-treatment appearance.

Can dermal fillers be combined with other treatments?

Yes, dermal fillers can be combined with other treatments to enhance your overall results. For example, we can use Botox or Dysport to relax overactive muscles and dermal fillers to plump areas that have lost volume. This combination allows us to address both wrinkles caused by muscle movement and wrinkles caused by age-related volume loss. We can also use fillers in combination with laser treatments or chemical peels to improve skin texture and tone.
