Sculptra® Aesthetic

What do we do when Botox and Dermal Fillers such as Juvederm Voluma aren’t enough? Sculptra® Aesthetic is the answer. Sculptra is all about improving global volumization loss. Whether it’s a result of dramatic weight loss or simply just getting older, this is for patients who lack the structure, support, and volume in their face that’s necessary for fillers to make a desired difference in their appearance. Sculptra can work as “sticky scaffolding” for collagen and elastin proliferation to which fillers can be layered on top.

Sculptra is an injectable volumizing treatment made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid. It is the synthetic form of lactic acid, which your body produces naturally following exercise. It is perfectly safe, FDA-approved, and contains absolutely no animal by-products or human DNA. Because the main component of Sculptra, poly-L-lactic acid is derived from natural components and does not harm the body, there is no need to test for allergic reactions. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used in surgical products for more than 20 years.

Sculptra acts as a bio-stimulator to build up the body’s own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles and restore lost facial volume. It stimulates your own collagen, allowing tissue to volumize gradually. Sunken cheeks and temples are common areas treated. However, many patients see great benefits from Sculptra when injected in the chin and the jawline too. Even more, many are choosing to reverse the signs of aging on their chests by having Sculptra injected in their chest wrinkles and folds, as well as knees.

Sculptra is for the “patient” patient. It is not for patients who need instant gratification. But if you can be patient, the results are absolutely worth the wait. Sculptra is one treatment administered over three appointments usually 4-6 weeks apart. Results are not immediate and are generally noticed about 1 month after their second treatment. Patients will continue seeing changes through the 9th month however, and at that time full results are expected. Sculptra will last 2-3 years once the series of treatments are completed. Since most patients want to keep up their results, most come in once a year for a booster treatment to keep collagen stimulation.

Technically, there is no actual downtime and most appointments are one hour. After the treatment, most patients feel that they can go about their normal activities. Because Lidocaine with Epinephrine is used, the chances of bruising are lessened, however there is always the risk of bruising due to the mere fact that a needle is being injected into the skin. Pain is also minimized with the use of topical numbing cream, ice and Lidocaine within the injection. Tenderness, swelling and redness the next few days are possibilities just like any other filler injection.

A complimentary 20-minute consultation is available to determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. The general rule of thumb for Sculptra is one vial per decade of life. So if you’re in your 40’s, you will most likely need 4 vials. There are exceptions to this rule depending upon volume loss however.
