BOTOX® Cosmetic corrects wrinkles made when expressing and also prevents static wrinkles from forming. Static wrinkles are wrinkles seen even when we are sleeping or relaxing and often lead to our loved ones asking, “Are you mad?” The only way to stop or soften the movement is to use a neuromodulator such as Botox.
Botox temporarily suspends the facial muscle action that causes them. Within 3 to 5 days, the treated areas will begin to soften and smooth out, and the wrinkles will continue to fade over the course of the next few weeks. At Wink, we take the time to consult and understand the result you are looking for.
BOTOX® helps prevent the formation of static wrinkles that make us look “sour” all the time. They are caused by the contractions of underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh, or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. You can soften the movement; therefore, softening wrinkles over time by staying on top of your BOTOX® treatments. Generally speaking, BOTOX® lasts about 3-4 months for most patients.
BOTOX® works by partially blocking the nerve impulses to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. This causes the muscles that are related to expression to relax. After about 10-14 days, the overlying skin will be smooth and unwrinkled while your untreated facial muscles will still function normally.
BOTOX® is a simple and safe procedure. We use a tiny needle to cause minimal sensation and discomfort. For those that are a little needle phobic, however, we are happy to ice the areas prior to injections.
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are primarily used for lines in between the eyebrows, lines on the forehead, and lines around the eyes. In addition, we commonly use Botox for “bunny lines” on the nose, chin creases, and to help upturn the corners of the mouth. We also commonly administer lip injections with Botox to both turn up the “cupid’s bow” on your lips as well as to help diminish those “smoker lines” even though you have never smoked.
Most everyone is a patient for BOTOX® because we all express. Contraindications are minimal. We do ask that if you can safely stop taking any blood thinners such as aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, and fish oil, 3-5 days prior that you do. This will lessen the likelihood of temporary bruising. There is always a chance of bruising but usually is very minimal with the BOTOX® injections.
Because the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary. In addition to bruising, patients may experience heavy brows, especially around day 10-14, and will diminish quickly over time. As well, patients can experience unevenness which can easily be corrected by running into the office for a quick five-minute touch-up.
Botox can either be administered lightly to give you a more youthful appearance by merely softening the ability to express or more strongly to give you the “frozen” look that some patients prefer. Whichever your preference, we do a thorough consultation to understand your desired look so that you may have the outcome you love.
