What Is a VI Peel? Benefits, Side Effects and Aftercare
If you’ve been noticing uneven texture, dark spots, or skin that just doesn’t look as fresh as it used to, a VI Peel might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
It’s one of our most-requested treatments at Wink Medical Aesthetics in Lakeway, and for good reason. The VI Peel targets acne, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and fine lines in a single session. It works across a wide range of skin tones. And unlike stronger peels, it fits into your real life, with a skin renewal process that wraps up within about a week.
If you’re trying to decide whether this is the right treatment for you, this guide walks you through how it works, what to expect during your skin renewal, and answers to the questions we hear most often.
What Is a VI Chemical Peel?
The VI chemical peel is a medium-strength peel developed by the Vitality Institute. It was designed to be gentler than a standard TCA peel while delivering comparable results. It works on the face, chest, and hands, and produces visible improvement with only three to seven days of active skin renewal.
The peel uses a blend of three active acids:
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
- Salicylic acid
- Phenol
Standard medium peels typically use TCA concentrations of 20 to 50%. The VI Peel uses a diluted blend at 10 to 12% concentration. That lower concentration is what makes it gentler and better tolerated across different skin tones.
The peel also contains ingredients that go beyond exfoliation:
- Retinoic acid — speeds cell turnover and reduces signs of aging
- Vitamin C — protects against free radical damage and supports collagen production
- Hydroquinone — fades hyperpigmentation from sun damage and hormonal changes
- Kojic acid — reduces excess melanin production
- Benzoyl peroxide — treats active acne and speeds cell renewal
- Hydrocortisone — calms inflammation and supports healing
The Vitality Institute offers six formulas under the VI Peel line: VI Peel Original, VI Precision Plus, VI Peel Purify, VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus, VI Peel Advance, and VI Peel Body. Your provider will recommend the right formula based on your skin concerns.

How Is It Different From a Standard Chemical Peel?
Most medium chemical peels use a single high-concentration acid, usually TCA alone. The VI chemical peel blends multiple acids at lower concentrations and adds the nourishing and brightening ingredients listed above.
The addition of phenol is also worth noting. Phenol is normally found in deep peels, where it produces dramatic but intense results and can require up to a month of recovery. In the VI Peel, phenol is used in a small enough concentration to boost results without the harsh recovery.
The outcome is a peel that treats the same concerns as stronger peels but with fewer risks, less discomfort, and far less time out of your routine.

Benefits of the VI Chemical Peel
Smoother texture and fewer fine lines The peel removes damaged outer skin layers and stimulates collagen production in the dermis. The result is a smoother surface with visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
Brighter, more even skin tone The acids remove skin cells with excess melanin. The brightening ingredients — vitamin C, hydroquinone, and kojic acid — boost this effect. Skin looks more even and radiant as it heals.
Cleared acne and reduced acne scars Salicylic acid unclogs pores, reduces inflammation, and regulates oil production. TCA stimulates collagen remodeling in the dermis to soften the appearance of acne scars.
Minimal recovery period Most patients resume normal activity the same day. Active skin renewal begins around day two or three and resolves by day seven.
If your main concern is acne scarring or hyperpigmentation, we can also combine the VI Peel with other treatments. Ask about your options at your consultation.
Side Effects to Know
The VI chemical peel is well-tolerated by most patients. Here’s what to expect after treatment:
- During the peel: Mild warmth for a few seconds as each layer is applied. This fades quickly.
- Days 1 to 2: Skin may appear pink to red.
- Days 2 to 3: Skin begins to flake.
- Days 3 to 7: Active skin renewal. Skin sheds the treated layers and new skin emerges.
Less common side effects include swelling, itching, blistering, infection, and in rare cases, scarring or hyperpigmentation. Following your aftercare instructions significantly reduces these risks.
Aftercare: How to Care for Your Skin After a VI Chemical Peel
We send every patient home with a post-treatment kit. It includes a mild cleanser, retinoid towelettes, VI Derm Moisturizer, and hydrocortisone cream.
Key aftercare rules:

- Stay out of direct sunlight
- Skip hot environments, including saunas and hot yoga, until fully healed

Proper aftercare protects your results and reduces the chance of complications. If something doesn’t look or feel right during healing, call our office.

Frequently Asked Questions About VI Chemical Peels
Is a VI Peel a medium or deep chemical peel?
The VI Peel is a medium-strength chemical peel. It penetrates the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) and reaches the top of the middle layer (the dermis). It is deeper than a superficial peel but does not go as deep as a phenol peel or other deep peels.
How many VI Peel treatments will I need?
One treatment produces visible improvement. Many patients choose to repeat the peel two to three times per year to maintain results or address ongoing concerns like acne or sun damage. Your provider will recommend a frequency based on your skin goals.
Is the VI Peel safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. The VI Peel is formulated to work on a wide range of skin tones, including deeper complexions that are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after peels. This is one of the features that sets it apart from many other medium peels.
What skin concerns does the VI chemical peel treat?
The VI Peel is most commonly used to treat acne and acne scars, hyperpigmentation and dark spots, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven skin tone and texture.
Is the VI Peel comfortable?
Most patients experience a brief mild sensation of warmth when the solution is applied. This resolves within seconds. The treatment is not considered uncomfortable and requires no numbing.
Can I wear makeup after a VI Peel?
We recommend avoiding makeup for at least the first 24 hours. Your provider will give you specific guidance based on how your skin responds, but generally, wearing makeup while your skin is actively renewing is not advised.
How long does the peeling last?
That’s a tricky question because some people peel and some people slough, depending on their skin. Either way, the results are still going to be beneficial.
Can I combine the VI Peel with other treatments?
In many cases, yes. The VI Peel pairs well with treatments like microneedling and other skin-resurfacing options. We recommend a consultation so we can build a treatment plan around your goals.
How soon will I see results?
Most patients see visible improvement within one to two weeks of treatment, once the active skin renewal is complete. Skin continues to improve over the following weeks as collagen rebuilds.
Who is not a good candidate for the VI Peel?
The VI Peel is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for patients with active skin infections, or for those with certain skin conditions. A consultation with our team will confirm whether it’s the right treatment for you.
